This week I wish to discuss Reiki Attunements. They are an intrinsic part of the Reiki training process and provide the energetic link through the unbroken lineage of Masters Teachers back to Dr Usui the founder of Usui Shiki Ryoho.
There are many variations of passing attunements and I personally have experienced at least six different methods each of which had it’s own particular quality. When it comes to the process of giving an attunement, I admit to have had days where I wondered if simply just sitting in the room with clear intent would suffice and if I had more courage I would love to invite Master Teachers to sit quietly for their attunement until they felt it had taken place rather than me telling them it has, after all it happened that way for Dr Mikao Usui as there was no one else there to anchor the attunement for him. Will I be protected when I give Reiki?
This is one of the most frequently asked questions in my Reiki classes and in this weeks blog I will explain my own philosophy on the subject and the wider implications of holding onto the need for protection .
A quick search on google reveals opposing views on the subject. One camp firmly believing in the need for some additional measures to be taken in order to feel protected from outside energies and there are many inventive methods listed that claim to offer this. “Aura Shields, Reiki Bubbles, Earth Bound Spirit Flush”..Are just a small sample of what I have found. This week I want to talk a little about The Five Reiki Principles that are an important part of our Reiki training and continuing self development both as Reiki practitioners and more importantly as everyday human beings. The five principles form the Gokai which was written by Mikao Usui as a set of precepts that his students recited in Gassho and could govern their lives by. Written in Japanese in Usui’s own hand above, the original Gokai when translated into English goes something like this;
MIND AND BODY IMPROVEMENT USUI REIKI HEALING ART TEACHING PRINCIPLES MYSTIC ART TO INVITE HAPPINESS MIRACULOUS MEDICINE TO CURE ALL DISEASES TODAY ONLY DO NOT ANGER DO NOT WORRY WITH THANKFULNESS WORK DILIGENTLY TO OTHERS BE KIND MORNING AND EVENING IN GASSHO HOLD THIS IN YOUR MIND AND CHANT
Today I was given a great example of the body mind connection when I took my 11 year old daughter to have the cast she had been wearing for a fractured wrist removed. To give you some background to this injury, my daughter is an incredible dancer and gymnast (I know I am a doting father but trust me she really is). For the last 12 months she has been practicing for a show with a series of solo performances at the Lighthouse in Poole which is in a little over ten days time. The fracture was obviously a disaster to her and today was D day for her and the dance school, in terms of what she would be able to salvage. The nurse very efficiently informed her she would cut off the plaster cast she has had on and the doctor would examine it and send her if needed for another X Ray. The moment the plaster came off, my daughter burst into tears and as I hugged her she said Dad it really hurts. I quickly sat her down and asked her to hold my hand whilst I provided support to her wrist with my other hand. I allowed Reiki to flow and then calmly said to her, “Your arm has got used to being supported and we just need it to know it’s going to be ok without the cast”. Feeling reassured (supported) she calmed down a little and while we waited for the doctor I just let energy flow into her arm. Continue reading →
Before you all jump to the conclusion that this is an unashamed attempt at promoting my own book title, I would like to explain…
James deacon who I might add I am a great fan of has highlighted the fact that many New Age Reiki practices include the chakras as part of their training and questions their validity. Dr Usui appeared not to include Chakra theory in his practice and the Ryoho Shishin suposedly his original treatment guide does not mention them. However it must be said that the Ryoho Shishin is little more than a list of ailments and area’s of the body that should be treated and was intended as a resource for new students who were unable to scan or sense the area of need in a patient through practices like Byosen Reikan Ho. This week I wish to talk about the validity of Distant attunements in the Reiki practice. With the growing trend in internet training, there are many distant Reiki courses cropping up all over the Web with the bulk of the training given as correspondence and the initiation given from a distance. Proponents of these courses cite convenience and cost as the main incentives to study this way. Firstly, being able to fit your Reiki course into your busy life, studying when you want to and receiving the attunements in the quiet of your own home are certainly good arguments for this method of training. Secondly the cost of remote courses is generally lower than the more traditional weekend format where your teacher is present. Continue reading →
This weeks blog is in honor of Chujiro Hayashi and the contribution he made to the practice of Reiki. Often he is overlooked and yet it is his additions to the system of Reiki that have shaped Western practitioners more than any other.
With the recent growth of Japanese systems like Jikiden that report to align themselves more closely with Usui’s original teachings, if you look more closely you find that in fact they are derived from Hayashi’s school in much the same way as Hawayo Takata’s ‘Usui Shiki Ryoho’ or more derogatorily labelled these days ‘The Western system of Reiki’ .
